Best Tripods to Buy for Beginners

We are slowly creeping into tripod season now those nights are really drawing in, perfect to practice your long exposures, fire work photography and experiment with shutter speeds!

There are so many tripods on the market, that it can be overwhelming, just the same as purchasing your new camera! We have had lots of requests recently for which Tripods are Best to Buy for Beginners and it really comes down to budget and usage.

There are 3 budgets listed – under £50, mid range £50 and up to £100.  Some tripods can fetch up to hundreds and hundreds of pounds, but you don’t need to be looking at that range just yet. I have listed my favourites on this blog and hope you will find it of use.

Let us know which tripod you go for in the end!

Joby GorillaPod Original Tripod

Perfect for popping in your camera bag for quick happy snaps.  One of the better compact cameras for SLR’s as the flexible legs are great for stability when out on location, such as using a tree or bench for support where you can wrap the tripod around.

Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod with Handgrip for Compact System Cameras

Another handy little compact tripod that is great for the handbag. Not as useful as the Gorillapod that can be wrapped around anything for stability when out on location.  Ideal if you want to do a group selfie on your phone or compact camera, will take the weight of an SLR, but something a little more sturdy would be ideal. An ideal camera lovers Christmas present!

AmazonBasics 127cm (50″) Lightweight Tripod with Bag

One of the cheaper full size tripods on the market from Amazon. It is called Amazon basics for a reason, handy, but wouldn’t trust it left alone outside with your camera on it – think gust of wind situation!  The base plate can be a little fiddly to attach to camera, but once you have practiced a few times, you will get there. Good piece of equipment for the cost, but would advise to spend a little extra if you can for something more sturdy.

Neewer Portable 70 inches/177 centimeters Aluminium Alloy Camera Tripod Monopod with 3-Way Swivel Pan Head,Bag for DSLR Camera,DV Video Camcorder,Load up to 8.8 pounds/4 kilograms Red(SAB264)

Really like this tripod from Neewer – not a big name in the photography realms, but this tripod seems excellent for the money.  Comes in 3 colours – red, blue and silver – red is great for visibility if you plan using your tripod often in darker situations so handy for health and safety.

It comes with a really useful baseplate that swivels 3 way with easy buttons to control the direction of the tripod head. The most useful of all is the fact it converts from a tripod 3 legged to monopod 1 legged support in seconds.  Handy if you would prefer regular support from your tripod.

Manfrotto Compact Action Aluminium Tripod with Hybrid Head – Black

One of my favourite mid range tripods for the amateur photographer.  Manfrotto are always my manufacturer of choice purely for their build and reliability. We use this tripods big brother and have never had a problem for all the years we have had it.

This particular model seems really sturdy and the real selling feature if the head attachment – known commonly as a joystick head, you don’t have to worry about 3 or 4 dials to change the position of the tripod, it is so straight forward, simply connect your base plate to the camera, secure, and use the joy stick to manoeuvre.  Really easy!

Neewer Camera Tripod Monopod with Rotatable Center Column for Panoramic Shooting – Aluminum Alloy 75 inches/191 centimeters, 360 Degree Ball Head for DSLR Camera Video Camcorder up to 26.5 pounds

One of the more expensive tripods for the amateur is this one from Neewer again. I really like the rotating centre column on this one and the ability to have the arm at 90degree angle. This is PERFECT for those that want to do more aerial photography and save their backs – such as flower beds and low angle work.  This is also great if you love lay flat photography for still life lovers, purely down to the angular head.  A really great investment that will last you for years.
